Golden Eagles Down Stony Brook, 3-0, in 2010 Opener

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Junior outside hitter Ashley Beyer's 13 kills led the Marquette University women's volleyball team past Stony Brook, 3-0, Friday evening in the first match of 2010 at the Golden Gopher Invite.

Outside of Beyer's 13 kills, MU was led by senior setter Nikki Klingsporn's 34 assists, while freshmen Rachel Stier and Julie Jeziorowski each contributed six digs. Jeziorowski started at libero for the Golden Eagles, who hit .321 as a team (40 kills-13 errors-84 total attacks).

The Golden Eagles shot out in the first set to a quick 16-6 lead on eight straight points with two kills each coming from Beyer and Carlson. From there MU was able to keep the Seawolves at arms length for the remainder of the opening stanza, eventually taking the set 25-16 on a final kill from Beyer. 

Six of Stony Brook's points in the first came off Marquette errors, including a Klingsporn service error at 16-6.

Sophomore right-side hitter Danielle Carlson led MU in the first frame with four kills on five attempts while Beyer had three. Klingsporn contributed 11 assists in the first.

Following a play stoppage between sets one and two due to a scoreboard power outage, the Golden Eagles jumped to a 3-0 lead on a Rabbecka Gonyo kill. Gonyo contributed on MU's first five points with two kills, an ace and a block. Stony Brook fought back and remained close to the Golden Eagles, eventually tying the match at 13-13 before MU pulled ahead 23-16 on a back-row kill from Beyer. Beyer's kill came after a spectacular save early in the rally by Jeziorowski.

MU was led in the second set by Beyer's five kills. 

The Golden Eagles and Seawolves exchanged leads in the early portion of the third set with Stony Brook holding its last lead at 13-12. MU closed out the set 25-19 on another kill from Beyer.

Marquette returns to action Saturday at the Golden Gopher Invite against Denver and No. 6 Minnesota at 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m., respectively. The Minnesota match will be streamed live at
