LOS ANGELES--The Marquette women's volleyball team dropped its first match of the season on Saturday evening, falling 3-1 (17-25, 22-25, 25-16, 14-25) to Santa Clara in the final match of the USC Baden Invitational.

Senior setter Sara Blasier tallied her second double-double in as many matches with 30 assists and 11 digs, while freshman Madeline Mosher recorded a career-high 10 kills as she opened her Marquette (2-1) campaign with a stellar weekend. Redshirt sophomore Taylor Louis connected on nine kills with 10 digs and four blocks.

Senior Lauren Houg and junior Manon Geoffroy also posted double digit digs with 21 and 11, respectively.

Houg and redshirt sophomore Jenna Rosenthal were named to the USC Baden All-Tournament team for their performance in the three matches this weekend.

"I think opening weekend is about the team that can play the best, the longest and this weekend Santa Clara was the most consistent," head coach Ryan Theis said. "We always strive to play at s consistent and high level and I think we are ahead of where we were a year ago, but we have a long way to go."

MU got off to a slow start in the first set, falling 25-17. In the second frame Marquette and Santa Clara traded points and leads with four changes, but the Broncos took control after the score was tied at 17 and did not give up the lead again, with a 25-22 victory. Louis netted six kills with no errors in the set, while the Golden Eagles had three blocks.

Marquette extended the match with a 25-16 win in the third set as the Golden Eagles held Santa Clara to .094 hitting. Mosher tallied five kills with just one error in the frame, while MU combined for four blocks. The Broncos got on the board first, but after the Golden Eagles took a 2-1 lead on an error they did not trail for the remainder of the set.

In the final set, MU was tied with Santa Clara at 4-4, but the Broncos used a 7-2 run to break away with an 11-6 lead as Marquette called timeout. The Golden Eagles still could not score after the break as Santa Clara tallied five unanswered points, which extended the lead to 16-6 before finishing with a 25-14 victory.

Jensen Cunningham and Sabrina Clayton led Santa Clara (3-0) with 16 and 15 kills, respectively, while Taylor Laugero collected 26 digs.

The Golden Eagles will travel to Wichita State next weekend for tournament play as they face IUPUI, Cincinnati and the host Shockers. MU opens on Friday, Sept. 2 against IUPUI at 4:30 p.m. Central time.
