Rabbecka Gonyo Leads Golden Eagles Past Denver, 3-0

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Marquette University women's volleyball team added its second three-set sweep of the season in as many matches by defeating Denver, 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-18), Saturday at the Golden Gopher Invitational. MU will play No. 6 Minnesota at 7 p.m. Saturday after the Golden Gophers unveil their 2009 NCAA Final Four banner in a pre-match ceremony.
Senior middle hitter Rabbecka Gonyo led MU with 12 kills and also added three blocks, five digs and two service aces in the contest. Sophomore Carol Henney, filling in for the injured Kelsey Mattai, reached a career-high four blocks, while freshman libero Julie Jeziorowski notched a team-high 10 digs.
Gonyo came out hot in the first set with five kills, including three in a row to put the Golden Eagles up 11-8. After a DU timeout, the Pioneers responded with two points before Gonyo added two aces consecutively to go up 15-10. Marquette closed out the first set, hitting .484 (16 kills, one error, 31 total attacks) as a team. Klingsporn assisted on 13 of MU's 16 kills in the stanza.
The second set began once again with a Gonyo kill and two Marquette runs led to DU timeouts at 9-5 and 16-10. MU took its largest lead of the set at 20-12 on a Danielle Carlson kill and closed out the frame 25-16.
In the final set, Gonyo added four kills to pace the Golden Eagles to a 25-18 victory.
The Pioneers were held to a .115 attack percentage (31-20-96), including a percentage of .000 (8-8-32) in the third set. Alex Turgeon led DU with eight kills.
With the victory, MU improves to 2-0 on the season, while the Pioneers fall to 0-2.
