Aug. 28, 2010
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Marquette University women's volleyball team was unable to hold off No. 6 Minnesota, falling 3-0 (27-25, 25-17, 25-22) Saturday evening in the final match of the Golden Gopher Invite. Seniors Nikki Klingsporn and Rabbecka Gonyo were named to the all-tournament team for their play over the weekend.
Klingsporn led MU with a double-double of 40 assists and 10 digs, while junior outside hitter Ashley Beyer paced the Golden Eagles against Minnesota with 15 kills.
The Golden Gophers were led by outside hitter Tabi Love's 18 kills and tournament most valuable player Jessica Granquist at libero.
The Golden Eagles battled hard in the first set before ultimately falling short, 27-25. With Minnesota sitting at set point, Shymansky called his first timeout of the season at 24-23 and Ciara Jones responded out of the break with a poignant kill. Following another Gopher point, MU used its final timeout of the frame and a Beyer kill pulled the squads even at 25-25.
Marquette held the largest advantage of the first set at 10-7 following a Rachel Stier service ace. Stier's ace came at the end of a 5-0 run for the Golden Eagles, who also led by three at 12-9 following a kill by Beyer.
Minnesota pulled away in the second set to 11-7 and 19-13 leads, leading to two MU timeouts, out of which Gonyo responded with kills. The Gophers kept the Golden Eagles at a distance to capture the set 25-17.
MU came out of the intermission with a little more authority and led for the last time of the match at 10-9 on a kill from Beyer. The Golden Eagles fought through the remainder of the set to come within one at 22-21, on a Ciara Jones, kill before the Gophers claimed the match with a 25-22 victory.
Marquette returns to action Friday, Sept. 3 at the Stanford Invitational against UC Irvine at 8 p.m. Central Time. MU will also face tournament host No. 4 Stanford on Saturday before making the trip to play at St. Mary's (Calif.) on Sunday.
