Marquette Volleyball Drops Season Opener To Texas A&M
Aug. 29, 2003 Milwaukee - The Marquette volleyball team opened its 2003 season Friday evening against No. 31-ranked Texas A&M in the Duke Invitational and played the Aggies tough before falling in three games, 28-30, 26-30, 30-32. Freshman Theresa Coughlin (Chicago) led the Golden Eagles' offensive effort with 13 attacks while freshman Jamie Mueller (Richfield, Wis.) was the other Marquette player to record double digits in that category with 11. Senior setter Gemma Greer (Winfield, Ill.) doled out 32 assists to pace the squad in that category. Turning in solid defensive efforts were junior Erin Freer (Stevensville, Mich.) and junior Sarah Vernon (Englewood, Col.) with 15 and 11 digs, respectively. Marquette finished with just a .071 hitting percentage (41-31--141) while limiting Texas A&M to 16.7 percent (47-24--138). The Aggies enjoyed a 62-59 edge in digs and registered 11 team blocks compared to MU's seven.
Marquette continues play in the tourney on Saturday with matches against Duke (11:30 a.m.) and Pittsburgh (4:00 p.m.).
