AMES, Iowa-- The Marquette University women's volleyball team opened Saturday's action in the Cyclone Invitational with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-15) sweep over Dayton in the first match of the day at Hilton Coliseum.
Redshirt freshman Taylor Louis led Marquette (2-0) with 17 kills, while senior Erin Lehman and junior Joy Miley each recorded seven kills. Junior Sara Blasier handed out a match-high 36 assists and had 12 digs for her second double-double in as many matches. Junior Lauren Houg also tallied 12 digs.
The Flyers (0-3) were led by Alaina Turner and Jenna Jendryk with nine kills apiece.
"I thought our offense led the way and I give credit to Sara (Blasier) for getting everyone involved," head coach Ryan Theis stated. Overall, I thought we had a much better match from the serve-pass aspect."
MU nearly faltered in the second frame after Dayton held off the Golden Eagles' set point four times. Louis eventually found the floor for a kill, giving Marquette the win, 25-23.
The Golden Eagles won the third set in relative ease as they jumped out to an early 6-2 advantage after a pair of errors from Dayton. MU continued to extend its lead with a 21-12 advantage after Miley slammed down a kill and claimed match point after an attack error from the Flyers. Louis nailed the final for the set win, 25-15 and match sweep.
Marquette concludes the Cyclone Invitational at No. 21 Iowa State beginning at 6:30 p.m. CT.
