Marquette Upsets No. 21 Iowa State, 3-0

AMES, Iowa-- The Marquette University women's volleyball team bested No. 21 Iowa State in straight sets, 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 26-24) on Saturday evening at the Hilton Coliseum to close out the opening weekend as winners of the Cyclone Invitational.

It was the first time the Golden Eagles (3-0) defeated a ranked opponent since a victory over No. 7 Florida on Sept. 6, 2014.


Taylor Louis notched 15 kills in the match, while senior Erin Lehman recorded eight. Redshirt junior Sara Blasier dished out 29 assists and junior Lauren Houg totaled 22 digs for the night.

Iowa State (2-1) was led by Jess Schaben with 12 kills as Caitlin Nolan recorded 14 digs.

Marquette had a 7-0 run early in the first set and did not trail the Cyclones again after holding a 10-5 lead. The Golden Eagles let Iowa State creep back in within one point at 20-19, but Joy Miley, Meghan Niemann and Louis all contributed kills to earn the final points needed for a 25-20 win in the frame.

Iowa State used a 7-2 run early in the second set and held an 11-6 lead after a kill, but Marquette capitalized on 17 attack errors from the Cyclones and stormed back into the game. After taking a 17-16 lead the Golden Eagles did not trail again pulling away with a 25-21 victory and headed into the break up, 2-0 in the match.

After breaking out to a 15-3 lead in the third set, the Golden Eagles let Iowa State creep back in to force a tight contest. MU earned match point after an attack error from the Cyclones, 24-18, but ISU was resilient and fought off the Golden Eagles with six consecutive points to tie the game at 24 each. Niemann slammed down a kill and the Cyclones hit an error for the final two points.

Marquette will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 4 at the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational hosted by Missouri State. The Golden Eagles will face Oral Roberts at 4 p.m. CT
