Marquette Sweeps (RV) UCSB at Rams Volleyball Classic

New head coach Ryan Theis led the Golden Eagles into fall action for the first time.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Marquette University women's volleyball team kicked off the first match of the Ryan Theis era with a 25-10, 25-16, 25-17 sweep of (RV) UC-Santa Barbara in the Rams Volleyball Classic at Moby Arena on Saturday.   

Sophomore outside hitter Autumn Bailey paced the (RV) Golden Eagles (1-0) with 12 kills, while senior right-side hitter Lindsey Gosh posted 10 kills and hit .429 on the afternoon. Setters Mary Nilles and Gabby Benda, who shared time in a 6-2 offense, notched 17 assists and 13 assists, respectively.

Sophomore Lauren Hough donned the gold libero jersey for the first time in her career and recorded nine digs, while Nilles got the start at setter.

The Gauchos, who are also receiving votes (26 points) in the AVCA Coaches Preseason Poll, hit just .027 (27-24-112) for the match and received a team-best eight kills from Jaylen Villanueva.

The Golden Eagles cruised to a 25-10 victory in the opening set while hitting .348 to the Gauchos' -.083. Following a UCSB point to cut Marquette's lead to 11-8 in the first, MU ripped off 14 of the final 16 points of the frame. The final kill came from Erin Lehman, who started her first match at outside hitter since her freshman season.

Marquette raced out to an early 10-2 lead in the second set on a service ace from Ellie Rauch and held on for a 25-16 victory and a 2-0 lead at the intermission. The Golden Eagles notched 14 kills, led by four apiece from Niemann and Gosh, in the second but hit just .235.

The third set was a little tighter before the Golden Eagles eventually closed out the sweep with a 25-17 victory.

The Golden Eagles have won their last three season lid-lifters and are 20-20 all-time (14-15 as members of NCAA Division I).

Marquette resumes action on Saturday at 6 p.m. Central time against VCU in the Rams Volleyball Classic.
