CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Marquette University women's volleyball team kicked off the Xavier Invitational early Friday morning with a 25-21, 25-21, 27-25 sweep of Mississippi at the Cintas Center. The Golden Eagles (2-1) return to action at 4 p.m. CT against Tennessee Tech in their first-ever meeting.

Freshman Erin Lehman led Marquette with 10 kills in the victory, while senior Danielle Carlson notched nine and three players added seven. Junior setter Elizabeth Koberstein, matching up with a Southeastern Conference foe for the first time since transferring from Kentucky, notched a career-high seven kills to go along with 33 assists.

Junior outside hitter Kara Morgan led Ole Miss (1-3) with a match-high 15 kills in the contest. The Rebels combined to hit .195 in the match with 43 kills and 20 errors on 118 attacks.

Although the Golden Eagles trailed early in all three sets, they were able to close out the Rebels thanks to some heady play late in each frame.

Ole Miss sat at set point, 24-22, and was looking to extend the match as MU responded to knot the match at 24 following a Lehman kill and an attack error by Allegra Wells.

A Holly Mertens kill put MU ahead 25-24 in the third as Ole Miss used its final timeout. The Rebels tied the frame at 25 out of the stoppage but consecutive attack errors gave MU the set and the match, 27-25.

Marquette used an attack percentage of .410 (19 kills, three errors, 39 attempts) in the second set to overpower the Rebels for a 2-0 match advantage at the intermission. The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as five and 20-19 late in the second before sealing  a 25-21 victory.

Marquette also claimed the opening set 25-21 after hitting a combined .282 (15-4-39). Carlson and Lehman each had five kills in the first with each taking 11 swings.

Senior middle hitter Kelsey Mattai posted a season-best mark of seven kills with three blocks.
