Marquette Notches Second Sweep of Friday vs. Tennessee Tech

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Marquette University women’s volleyball team won both matches Friday against Mississippi and Tennessee Tech in straight sets at the Xavier Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Marquette (3-1) kicked off tournament play early Friday morning with a 25-21, 25-21, 27-25 sweep of Mississippi and defeated Tennessee Tech 25-14, 25-19, 25-13 in the afternoon contest.

Freshman outside hitter Erin Lehman led Marquette with 10 kills in the victory against Ole Miss, while senior middle Danielle Carlson notched nine and three players added seven.  Junior setter Elizabeth Koberstein, matching up with a Southeastern Conference foe for the first time since transferring from Kentucky, notched a career-high seven kills to go along with 33 assists.

Junior outside hitter Kara Morgan led Ole Miss (1-3) with a match-high 15 kills in that contest. The Rebels combined to hit .195 in the match with 43 kills and 20 errors on 118 attacks.

Although the Golden Eagles trailed early in all three sets against Ole Miss, they were able to finish off the Rebels thanks to composed play late in each frame.

Ole Miss sat at set point in the third, 24-22, and was looking to extend the match as MU responded to knot the set at 24 following a Lehman kill and an attack error by Allegra Wells.

A Holly Mertens kill put MU ahead 25-24 in the third as Ole Miss used its final timeout. The Rebels tied the frame at 25 out of the stoppage but consecutive attack errors gave MU the set and the match, 27-25.

The Golden Eagles concluded the day with a 25-14, 25-19, 25-13 sweep of Tennessee Tech (1-4).

Carlson led MU against TTU with 13 kills on 19 attacks (.632), while sophomore outside Lindsey Gosh added eight, including five kills in the third set. Senior Carol Henney saw her first action of the season and chipped in five kills and six blocks from the middle.

Tennessee Tech hit a combined .066 (25-19-91) against MU.

Marquette jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the opening set against TTU and led by as many as 10 before closing out the first frame, 25-14. MU hit .423 (14-3-26) in the first set and combined to hit .316 (44-13-98) in the match.
