Sept. 1, 2012
Cincinnati, Ohio - The Marquette University women's volleyball team collected its third consecutive win of the weekend by sweeping tournament-host Xavier 26-24, 25-21, 27-25 to capture the top spot of the Xavier Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Cintas Center.
The Golden Eagles (4-1) were paced by redshirt-senior Holly Mertens' 13 kills and sophomore Lindsey Gosh, who hit .308 (12-4-26) on the afternoon. Xavier (4-3) hit .168 as team, and was led by Sarah Brown's eight kills.
Junior Elizabeth Koberstein, who tallied 37 assists and 12 digs in the match, was named the invitational's most valuable player, while teammates Danielle Carlson and Gosh earned all-tournament team recognition.
MU failed to drop a single set on the weekend, beating each opponent in straight sets.
Marquette was dominant through the majority of the first set, holding the lead throughout the frame until Xavier battled back and evened the score at 24-24. The Musketeers had a pair of attack errors on the last two points to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead in the match.
After claiming the second set, Marquette came out flat to begin the third frame, allowing Xavier to jump out to a 9-5 lead. Mertens stepped up in the set, collecting six of her 13 kills in the frame, and led the MU comeback.
With the score knotted at 23-23, head coach Bond Shymansky called a time out. Points were exchanged back and forth until Kelsey Mattai and Mertens hammered home kills to take the set, 27-25, and the match.
MU returns to the Al McGuire Center next weekend to host the Ambassador Hotel Golden Eagle Classic. Marquette will have a pair of matches on Friday, Sept. 7 to open tournament play. The Golden Eagles will take on Eastern Illinois at 10 a.m., before battling Michigan in the nightcap at 7 p.m.
