Marquette Blanks Miami of Ohio, 3-0
Sept. 1, 2017
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Marquette University women's volleyball squad was back in action Friday playing in the Hampton Inn Invitational on the campus of IUPUI. The Golden Eagles made swift work of Miami (Ohio), blanking the Redhawks 3-0 (25-14, 26-24, 25-16) to open the tournament.
Marquette (2-2) had a balanced scoring attack and was led by redshirt junior Jenna Rosenthal and sophomore Allie Barber with nine kills each, while freshman Elizabeth Orf connected on eight and hit a .727 clip. Freshman Hope Werch and junior Anna Hawk each recorded five kills apiece.
"I thought Lauren did a good job getting everyone involved early and often and our ball handlers did a good job against a tough serving team," head coach Ryan Theis said.
The Golden Eagles won the first set over the Redhawks (3-2) with relative ease, but had to mount a comeback in the second frame to preserve the sweep. MU held a 10-7 lead after an ace from Geoffroy, but Miami (Ohio) pressed and tied the set at 14-14 after a miscue from Marquette. The teams went back-and-forth in scoring, but the Redhawks claimed set point first at 24-22 after an ace, though the Golden Eagles used a kill from Werch and took advantage of an error from Miami to tie the score at 24. From there a service ace from Geoffroy and another kill from Werch closed out the set with a 26-24 victory.
MU played the third set tough and sailed through to its 25-16 win.
The Redhawks were led in scoring by Taylor Daignault with nine kills as Margaret Payne hit for seven kills and a .412 hitting percentage.
The Golden Eagles will have a quick turnaround and be back on the court Saturday morning at 9 a.m. CT when the squad faces Wichita State. The Shockers are also receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll.
