MU Drops a 3-2 Match to Wichita State

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Sophomore Allie Barber and redshirt junior Jenna Rosenthal each reached career highs with 26 and 20 kills, respectively, but it was not enough for the Marquette University women's volleyball team as the squad dropped a five-set battle, 3-2 (25-20, 25-18, 20-25, 18-25, 17-19) to Wichita State on Saturday morning at the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational.
Barber's 26 kills led Marquette (2-3), while Rosenthal recorded her second career double-double with 20 kills and 10 blocks. Freshman Hope Werch also had a career day with her second double-double of the season on a career-best 13 kills and 19 digs, also a career high.
Five Golden Eagles recorded double digit digs led by freshman Martha Konovodoff with a career-best 24, Werch's 19, junior Anna Haak tallied a career-best 16 digs, senior Manon Geoffroy's 15 digs was a career number, while sophomore Lauren Speckman collected 10 digs and produced her second double-double this year as she also dished a career-best 64 assists.
Marquette held the Shockers (5-0) to a .207 hitting percentage and owned the defensive advantage with 96 digs. Wichita State was led by Tabitha Brown with 21 kills, while Giorgia Civita collected a match-high 29 digs.
The Golden Eagles have short rest and are back on the court at 6 p.m. CT to close out the tournament against the host IUPUI Jaguars.
