Marquette Falters against Oral Roberts, 3-2
Sept. 4, 2015
SPRINGFIELD, Mo.-- The Marquette University women's volleyball team forced Oral Roberts to a fifth set, but was unable to close out the match falling 3-2 (20-25, 23-25, 28-26, 25-16, 12-15) in the first day of the Dr. Jo Wynn Invitational at Missouri State.
Redshirt freshman Taylor Louis smashed a career-best 28 kills and collected 13 digs for her first collegiate double-double, while junior Sara Blasier dished out 51 assists and also notched 13 digs for her third double-double this season. Senior Erin Lehman totaled 11 kills, while redshirt junior Meghan Niemann slammed 10. Junior Lauren Houg posted a match-high 25 digs and classmate Ellen Hays was also in double digits with 11 digs in the match.
"Oral Roberts came out and executed better than us in most phases," head coach Ryan Theis said. "We have a lot of new players working together and need to be better as a group late in matches. We had chances to win today and didn't convert."
ORU was led by Laura Milos with 33 kills, while setter Lucija Bojanjac handed out 56 assists.
After trailing 2-0 in the match heading into the break, the Golden Eagles stormed back to even the match at two sets apiece. Oral Roberts started the fifth frame with a 4-1 lead, which forced MU to use a timeout. Lehman and Louis found the floor for a pair of kills, which helped Marquette creep back into play and the set was tied at 12 after Louis totaled another kill. Oral Roberts closed out the match with three points in-a-row to win, 15-12.
The Golden Eagles will be back on the court Saturday morning to face Miami beginning at 11 a.m. at the Hammons Student Center.
