MILWAUKEE-The Marquette University women's volleyball team swept Binghamton Saturday afternoon to remain a perfect 3-0 at the Al McGuire Center in 2009.

Junior Rabbecka Gonyo led MU up front, recording a .444 attack percentage on the strength of nine assists and only one error. She also blocked four Binghamton attacks, three of which came consecutively in the first set.

"We're apparently are not a very fast starting team yet," said head coach Bond Shymansky. "It was a long day yesterday and I think we were just a little sluggish coming out of the gate and maybe underestimated Binghamton, which I wasn't very pleased about.  I gave them a little talking to and I thought our team responded well."

Marquette trailed for much of the first set, for as much as a seven point deficit.  However three big blocks in a row by Gonyo, Ashley Beyer and Danielle Carlson started the 7-0 run that allowed the Golden Eagles to rally back to tie the score at 17.  A block assist by Carlson and Mattai secured the Marquette victory with a final score of 25-22.

With the score in the second set tied at eight, Marquette took control by going on another big run, this time 6-0, to bring the score to 14-9.  After giving up a single point to the Bearcats, Nikki Klingsporn's three services aces were among five unanswered points for the Golden Eagles.  An unassisted kill by Gonya finished the out the set, bringing the final score to 25-16.

It was neck and neck for the most of the third set as neither team led by more than three points until Marquette hit the 21 point mark to lead by four.  The Bearcats fought back scoring three in a row to bring the score to 21-19.  After a lone point by Marquette, the Bearcats scored again bringing them within two.  Marquette ended Binghamton's hope of victory by going on a 3-0 run to end the game with a final score of 25-20.

The Golden Eagles return to action in the final match of the Marquette Invitational at 7:30 p.m. against Austin Peay for the tournament title. Live stats will be available on GoMarquette.com, as will a live streaming radio broadcast, courtesy of Marquette Radio (WMUR).
