Golden Eagles Roll Past Saint Louis, 3-0

LEXINGTON, Ky.--Redshirt sophomore Taylor Louis recorded 17 kills as the Marquette University women's volleyball team swept Saint Louis, 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-16) on Friday morning to open the Bluegrass Battle, hosted by the University of Kentucky.

Louis had just two errors and hit .385 in the match, while redshirt senior Meghan Niemann notched nine kills with only on miscue and recorded a stellar .533 clip. Senior Sara Blasier handed out 32 assists, while classmates Lauren Houg and Ellen Hays collected 22 and 11 digs, respectively.

As a squad, Marquette (5-2) combined to hit .350 with just nine errors, while holding the Billikens to a .153 hitting percentage.

Louis opened the match with three straight kills for MU and continued her excellent play as she closed out the set with her seventh kill, helping the Golden Eagles to a 25-17 victory. Marquette hit a stellar .455 clip combined in the frame, while Louis and Niemann hit .538 and .833, respectively.

After a 6-0 scoring run from Saint Louis, Amanda Green found the floor for a kill and the Golden Eagles trailed 8-4 in the second set. Each team had a pair of scoring runs and after the set was tied at 19 each, MU scored five unanswered points to go in front, 24-19. Saint Louis returned the favor with a four-point run of its own, but freshman Allie Barber was able to help hold off the Billikens and close the set, 25-23.

Marquette held a 13-11 lead in the third set, but used an 8-3 run to extend the lead to 21-14 after a kill from Blasier and finished out the final frame with a 25-16 victory.

The Golden Eagles will have a short break before returning to the court at 6:30 p.m. Central time to face host squad Kentucky at Memorial Coliseum.
