LEXINGTON, Ky.—The Marquette women’s volleyball team made quick work of Virginia on Saturday evening, sweeping the Cavaliers, 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-12) to put a final stamp on the Bluegrass Battle title.

Redshirt sophomore Taylor Louis was selected as the tournament MVP and redshirt senior Meghan Niemann, and classmates Sara Blasier and Lauren Houg earned all-tournament honors for their efforts in helping Marquette (7-2) to a 3-0 weekend of play.

MU rolled out to a 6-1 lead early in the first set and kept pressing on Virginia to extend the lead. UVA had managed to cclose the gap to just three points, 20-17, but the Golden Eagles stayed strong, winning the set after an error from the Cavaliers. Rosenthal has six kills in the frame on seven swings and hit a blistering .857, while the Golden Eagles connected on a .444 clip.

The Cavaliers took a 10-6 lead in the second set and pressed the advantage to 16-10 after a pair of errors from the Golden Eagles. Head coach Ryan Theis used two of his three available challenges in the second frame and both calls were reversed in MU’s favor, which changed the momentum of the set. Nikki Barnes entered to serve with the Golden Eagles trailing, 17-13 and launched three consecutive aces, which closed the gap to one point, 17-16. Louis smashed a kill to give Marquette a 22-21 lead and Blasier connected on a kill for the final point, sealing the comeback, 25-22.

Marquette took commanding control of the third set and rolled out to a 21-10 lead before finishing with the 25-12 victory after an error from Virginia.



The Golden Eagles will play their 2016 homeopener next weekend as the squad hosts the Marquette Invitational. MU opens play on Friday, Sept. 16 hosting Iowa State at 7 p.m. Central time.
