Marquette Falls, 3-2, at Wyoming
Sept. 11, 2015
LARAMIE, Wyo.--A late rally fell just short for the Marquette University women's volleyball team as the squad fell in five sets, 3-2 (20-25, 19-25, 25-23, 26-24, 12-15) at Wyoming on Friday to open the Pistol Pete's Showdown tournament.
This was the third fifth-set match in the past four matches that the Golden Eagles (5-2) have played and MU is now 1-3 this year when playing five sets.
Redshirt freshman Taylor Louis led three MU players in double digit kills with 21, while classmate Jenna Rosenthal and senior Erin Lehman each knocked down 10 kills and five blocks. Junior Lauren Houg collected 25 digs, while freshman Riley Burchett posted 13 digs and junior Ellen Hays added 10.
After trailing 2-0 in the match, MU won the next two sets to force the decisive fifth set and opened the final frame with a 6-4 advantage after redshirt junior Meghan Niemann connected on a kill. The Cowgirls managed to even the set at 7-7 and then took advantage of Marquette hitting errors to go in front, 9-7. A pair of errors from Wyoming kept the Golden Eagles as they were able to even the score at 12 apiece, but the Cowgirls scored three points in-a-row to claim a 3-2 win in the match.
Bridget Shanahan led three Cowgirls (6-1) in double figure kills with 18.
The Golden Eagles will be back on the court at 6 p.m. CT tonight to face Northern Colorado.
