Golden Eagles Down Rockets, 3-1

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's volleyball team improved to 5-4 on the season with a 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-23, 25-17) victory over Toledo Sunday at the Al McGuire Center in the finale of the Marquette/UW Milwaukee Invitational. The Golden Eagles were led by 19 kills and 12 digs from junior outside hitter Ashley Beyer and 16 kills from Ciara Jones.
For her play over the weekend, senior middle hitter Rabbecka Gonyo was named to the all-tournament squad for the third time in as many weeks. Gonyo recorded 12 kills on Sunday and an attack percentage of .524 (12 kills, 1 error, 21 attacks).
The Golden Eagles struck early and often against the Rockets in the first set, recording a .464 attack percentage in the stanza with six kills from Gonyo and four from Jones. MU jumped out to an early 14-7 lead to force a Toledo timeout and after another Rocket timeout at 20-12, took its largest lead at 21-12 on a Gonyo kill. The Rockets fell 25-16 after hitting just .118 (12-8-34) in the opening frame.
In the second set, Toledo held MU to an attack percentage of .179 (14-7-39), its lowest of the afternoon, to pull out a 25-23 set victory. Cassie Kleespies and Jordan Kielty led the Rockets with four kills each in the frame.
Marquette regained its composure out of the intermission to take a 2-1 advantage into the fourth set with a 25-23 victory. Senior setter Nikki Klingsporn assisted on 19 of the Golden Eagles 20 kills in the third.
After a Danielle Carlson attack error in the fourth put Toledo ahead 3-2, Marquette reeled off the next six points to build a 8-3 lead. The Golden Eagles were able to hold on from there to take the set and the match 25-17. Seven of MU's points in the final frame came off kills from Beyer.
The Rockets were paced in the match by 15 kills from Amber DeWeerdt.
Marquette returns to action Friday, Sept. 17 against Harvard in the Northwestern Invitational at 4:30 p.m. The Golden Eagles will then take on Charlotte and host Northwestern on Saturday.
