Barber Leads Volleyball to Sweep of James Madison

MILWAUKEE - Led by sophomore Nele Barber's 12 kills, the Marquette University women's volleyball team swept James Madison 25-12, 25-9, 25-17 in the first match of the Marquette Invitational Friday at the Al McGuire Center.

Marquette (4-2), which hit a combined .327 (46-10-110), recieved 12 kills from Barber and nine from middle hitter Meghan Niemann, who hit .615 with four blocks.

The Dukes (4-4) were paced by six kills from Lizzy Briones and hit .038 in the contest with 24 kills against 20 errors on 105 attacks. 

With much of the play going back-and-forth in the first set, MU pulled away towards the end, using a 5-1 run to obtain a 20-10 lead. Barber secured the victory with a kill, one of her five in the set. She finished with a hitting percentage of .556. Autumn Bailey and Niemann each contributed three kills for MU to finish the set .389 (17-3-36) as a team.

MU controlled play throughout the second set as Niemann led the squad with four kills for a quick 25-9 victory. Bailey and Barber each contributed three kills as the Golden Eagles hit .412 as a team. Eight of MU's points came off errors from the Dukes.  

The Dukes came out strong in the third set strong and led the match until senior right side hitter, Lindsey Gosh tied it at 9-9 with a kill. Marquette never relinquished the lead after Barber posted a kill to put the Golden Eagles ahead for good. Barber posted four kills as Gosh, Bailey, Niemann and Courtney Kintzel added two.   

The Golden Eagles return to action at 7 p.m. tonight against Rice at the Al McGuire Center.
