Volleyball Falls in Four Sets to Rice

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision (25-19, 25-19, 20-25, 25-15) to Rice on Friday evening in the Marquette Invitational at the Al McGuire Center.

The Golden Eagles (4-3) lost the nightcap to the Owls by hitting a combined .134, served up 11 errors from the service line and sided-out at 53 percent.

Autumn Bailey led MU in against Rice with 15 kills, while Lindsey Gosh was MU’s only other player in double digits with 10 kills. BIG EAST Conference blocking leader Meghan Niemann posted a match-high five blocks in the loss, along with six kills.

Rice (7-3), which hit just .200 for the match, received a team-high 14 kills and 18 digs from Leah Mikesky.

Marquette dropped the first set 25-19 after hitting -.023 (8-9-44) and turned in five service errors. Rice went on to take the second frame by the same margin, led by five kills from Mikesky.

The Golden Eagles rebounded in the third frame to hit .293, with seven kills from Bailey, on their way to a 25-20 victory.

The Owls closed out the match in the fourth set on a 10-1 run to take the frame 25-15 while hitting .353.

Marquette returns to action with two matches on Saturday, beginning with Green Bay at noon. They will also face UTSA at 8 p.m. in the tournament finale at the Al McGuire Center.
