Sept. 13, 2003
MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette volleyball team closed out play in the Holiday Inn City Center challenge this evening with a three-game loss to No. 23-ranked Missouri at the MU Gym. The Tigers saw their record move to 7-2 following a 30-22, 30-25, 30-26 decision over the Golden Eagles who slipped to 2-7 with the setback. Missouri finished the match with a 25.0 attack percentage (48-18--120) and used its height advantage to keep the Marquette offense in check for most of the evening as the Golden Eagles finished with an 11.7 hitting percentage (39-24--128). The Tigers held a 53-45 bulge in digs while Marquette posted a 9-8 edge in blocks. Sophomore Theresa Coughlin (Chicago) and junior Erin Freer (Stevensville, Mich.) each recorded 11 attacks to pace Marquette in that department. Coughlin was the lone Marquette player to earn All-Tournament honors. Freshman Jamie Mueller (Richfield, Wis.) and sophomore Caitie O'Brien (Wauwatosa, Wis.) shared for team honors with 12 digs apiece. Junior Erica Heisser (Grand Rapids, Mich.) led the team with five blocks while chipping in five attacks.
