FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Marquette University women's volleyball team responded from a morning defeat at the hands of No. 3 Penn State to sweep Florida Gulf Coast (26-24, 25-17, 25-16) on Saturday evening at Alico Arena in the Hilton Garden Inn/Homewood Suites Airport Volleyball Classic.

Redshirt freshman Meghan Niemann led the way for the Golden Eagles (3-3) with a match-high 13 kills and three blocks while hitting .478 (12-5-32). True freshman Autumn Bailey added to her team-leading kill total with 12 on the night and right-side hitter Lindsey Gosh chipped in 10 kills with a .444 hitting percentage.

Senior setter Elizabeth Koberstein added 40 assists for Marquette, which hit .297 as a team, while FGCU hit just .141.

The tournament-host Eagles (1-8) were led by eight kills from Olivia Mesner and Jessica Barnes added seven.

Marquette was able to pull out a 26-24 first set victory despite trailing for much of the frame. After taking the first point of the match, MU did not lead again until Bailey put it on top 23-22 with one of her set-high five kills.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in the second set and built their advantage throughout, hitting .306 as a team.  

Niemann powered MU to a 25-16 final set victory with six kills on nine swings without a single error. The Jackson, Wis., native combined with Bailey (five kills) in the third set to help Marquette close the frame on a 14-3 run.

Marquette fell to No. 3 Penn State in its first match of the afternoon 25-17, 25-12, 25-18.

The Golden Eagles conclude tournament play at 2 p.m. CT Saturday against Central Arkansas.
