Marquette Blanks Houston Baptist, 3-0 in Victory

MILWAUKEE - Making quick work of Houston Baptist, the Marquette volleyball team earned a 3-0 (30-25, 30-27, 30-22), victory over the Huskies to snap a four-game skid in the final match of the DoubleTree Marquette Challenge. Seniors Kim Todd and Jenn Brown, along with junior Terri Angst, were named to the All-Tournament team and Todd led MU (3-6) with 12 kills. Junior Ashlee Fisher posted 10 kills, while senior Katie Weidner dished out 33 assists. Sophomore Hailey Viola collected 14 digs with Angst posting 13. "I was very pleased with the performance. Terri Angst and Jenn Brown had a great weekend," head coach Pati Rolf said. "I felt like our offense ran better tonight, we had a lot more confidence out of Katie Weider, which made a huge difference. We're still trying to settle in to our lineup and utilize all of our players. I felt that we accomplished that tonight." Houston Baptist (8-2) was led by Jessica Barrera who hit 15 kills. Stephanie Lust collected 16 digs, while Natalie Magat dished out 28 assists. Marquette came charging into the first game with a 3-1 lead, but the Huskies pushed back and took a 7-5 lead. A kill by Fisher put the Golden Eagles ahead, 9-7, and they went on a 9-4 run to take a lead, 20-11. MU remained in the lead the remainder of the game and a kill by Fisher secured the victory, 30-25. Fisher slammed six kills in the game. Houston Baptist started hot in the second stanza, as they jumped to a 5-1 lead. Brown slammed a kill to get MU within two, 8-6, but they remained behind the Huskies. The Golden Eagles tied the score at 20 apiece and each team went point-for-point, as another Fisher kill tied the game at 22. Julie Richards gave MU its first lead with a kill, but the Huskies pushed back to take a 25-23 lead. A kill by Todd forced another tie at 26, but blocks by Brown and Rabbecka Gonyo put the Golden Eagles in front, 29-27, and Gonyo smashed a kill for Marquette's game two victory, 30-27. Todd hit four kills and Angst grabbed seven digs in the stanza.
Brown got Marquette rolling in game three as back-to-back kills put MU ahead, 4-3, and then Brown served consecutive aces for a 6-3 lead. The Golden Eagles continued to sail on a 12-2 run that put them ahead, 18-8 and forced the Huskies to use a timeout. The break did not deter MU as they remained in the lead as a kill by Tiffany Helmbrecht kept them ahead, 22-15. Helmbrecht notched another kill to bring the score to 25-18, and despite two tries to secure match-point, a hitting error from the Huskies gave MU, the 30-22 win. Marquette will be back on the court Sunday, Sept. 23, when they host Rutgers at 2 p.m., for the BIG EAST conference opener. |
