Golden Eagles Cruise to 3-0 Win Over Charlotte

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Marquette University women's volleyball team made quick work of Charlotte, winning its early match Saturday at the Wildcat Classic, 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-10).
The Golden Eagles were led by junior outside hitter Ashley Beyer's 14 kills and nine digs, while the 49ers were paced by six kills from Bianca Rouse.
Charlotte used two timeouts early in the first set, with MU leading 4-2 and 13-6, before ultimately falling 25-15. Marquette took an early 4-2 lead on a Beyer kill before Charlotte's first timeout and would build a 9-4 lead after two Rachel Stier service aces. MU led by as many as 11 points (23-12) in the first stanza, with its 23rd point coming off one of Beyer's five kills in the frame. Marquette held the 49ers to a .030 (10-9-33) hitting percentage in the opening set.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second before the 49ers took their first lead of the match at 5-4. Charlotte would use another early timeout after a 5-0 MU run gave Marquette an 11-7 lead. The 49ers would pull back to within one point at 11-10, but after a Beyer service error with MU up 16-13, Marquette built a 22-13 lead on one of Ciara Jones' team-leading four kills in the set.
MU jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the final set and led 11-3 following a 7-1 run. Marquette cruised from there to take the set and the match 25-10. Freshman outside hitter Casey Read saw her first collegiate action in the third set and did not record a kill on two attacks.
The Golden Eagles return to action at 7 p.m. against tournament host Northwestern in the finale of the Wildcat Classic.
