MILWAUKEE--The Marquette University women's volleyball team dropped its homeopener, a 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 18-25, 28-26, 13-15) loss to Wichita State in the Marquette Invitational on Friday evening at the Al McGuire Center.

It was the fourth time this season that the Golden Eagles (6-4) have played a five-set match, but the record in those contests is now 1-3.

Redshirt freshman Taylor Louis paved the ways offensively with a match-high 26 digs and collected a double-double with a career-best 16 digs. Junior Joy Miley posted a career-best 11 kills, while Ellen Hays tallied a career-best 16 digs. Four MU players recorded double digit digs as junior Lauren Houg posted 18 and freshman Riley Burchett notched 10 along with the 16 digs from Louis and Hays. Junior Sara Blaiser and redshirt junior Mary Nilles each spent time at setter this evening with 36 and 15 assists, respectively.

The Shockers (8-4) had two players record double-digit kills, as five Wichita State players posted double digit digs. Senior Katie Reilly topped the team with 20 kills, while Abbie Lehman posted 12. Emily Hiebert handed 48 assists.

After Marquette pushed the match to a fifth set by winning the fourth frame with an extended 28-26 score, the Golden Eagles took an early fifth set lead, 3-1 after a kill from senior Erin Lehman. The set was tightly contested, as no team took more than two-point lead throughout. In the end, Reilly's kill tallied the decisive 15th point for the Shockers.

The Marquette Invitational will continue Saturday, Sept. 19, with IUPUI and Albany starting the day off at 10 a.m. CT. The Golden Eagles will take the floor against Albany at noon.
