Marquette Defeats IUPUI, 3-1
Sept. 19, 2015
MILWAUKEE-- The Marquette University women's volleyball team earned the Marquette Invitational title after defeating IUPUI 3-1 (20-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-15) on Saturday evening to conclude the tournament. Joy Miley earned MVP honors while Nicki Barnes and Taylor Louis were selected to the all-tournament squad.
The Golden Eagles (8-4) combined for a season-high 86 digs as a team and had four players with double digit digs, led by 25 from junior Lauren Houg. Classmate Ellen Hays recorded a career-best 21 digs, while freshman Riley Burchett and junior Sara Blasier had 11 and 10 digs, respectively. Blasier notched a double-double adding a match-high 49 assists with her digs.
Offensively, Louis smashed a match-high 21 kills, her second 20+ output this weekend, while senior Erin Lehman and redshirt freshman Jenna Rosenthal added 12 kills apiece. Miley notched 10 kills in the match.
With the match tied at one set each following the break, the Jaguars seemed to take control of the third set and led 20-14 following a miscue from Marquette. Barnes came in to serve as the Golden Eagles trailed 21-17, and immediately served an ace, which sparked a 9-2 run for MU to close out the third frame with a win. It was one of three aces that Barnes tallied in the final stretch.
Marquette was steady in the fourth set and was able to push away from IUPUI after the score was tied at 6-6, and capitalized on three of the Jaguars' seven hitting errors in the final set. MU hit a stellar .400 in the last set and held IUPUI to just a .053 clip with only nine kills.
The Golden Eagles will open BIG EAST play on Wednesday, Sept. 23 hosting Xavier at 7 p.m. CT. The match will air live on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Patrick Reed on the call.
