MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's volleyball team kicked off its eighth season of competition in the BIG EAST Conference with a 25-19, 25-12, 25-20 sweep of Syracuse Saturday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center.

The Golden Eagles (10-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) were led by 12 kills from sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Gosh, while senior Holly Mertens added 10 for Marquette, which hit .301 (43 kills, 15 errors, 93 attacks) as a team in the contest. Gosh also added six digs, four blocks and a service aces on the afternoon.

The Orange (7-8, 0-1 BIG EAST) was paced by eight kills from sophomore outside hitter Andrea Fisher. Syracuse combined to hit just .053 (25-20-94) in the match.

The Golden Eagles opened play with an efficient 25-19 first-set win over the Orange. MU hit an impressive .452 as a team in the opening frame, with a mark of .706 (12-0-17) coming from outside hitters Gosh and Erin Lehman. Gosh led the squad with seven kills in the first on 10 swings.

The first included 10 ties and was close until the Golden Eagles reeled off four-straight points and took a 17-13 lead on a block by Carlson and Gosh. Junior setter Elizabeth Koberstein paced the MU offense in the first with 17 of her match-high 39 assists.

Marquette cruised to a 25-12 victory in the second set, which included a 9-0 run by the Golden Eagles. That run culminated with a Gosia Wlaszczuk attack error for the Orange as MU pulled out in front 18-7.

The Golden Eagles open BIG EAST play 1-0 for the second year in a row and the sixth time in their eight-year affiliation with the league.

Marquette makes its second road trip of the season, and first of BIG EAST Conference play, when it travels to Notre Dame to take on the Fighting Irish Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Purcell Pavilion. Following a 1 p.m. CT contest with Notre Dame, the Golden Eagles will head north for a 2 p.m. Sunday showdown with DePaul in Chicago.

#muvb's #ShymansKeys to the win over Syracuse:
1. Punishing play by MU's outside hitters
2. Containing Syracuse outside hitter Silvi Uattara
3. A balanced offensive attack (Gosh, Mertens, Carlson and Lehman each with seven-plus kills)
