Marquette Falters in BIG EAST Opener, 3-0
Sept. 23, 2015
MILWAUKEE--The Marquette University women's volleyball team dropped its BIG EAST Conference opener 3-0 (23-25, 16-25, 19-25) to Xavier on Wednesday evening at the Al McGuire Center.
Junior Joy Miley paced the offensive attack for the Golden Eagles (8-4, 1-0) posting 10 kills to go along with two blocks and a dig, while junior Lauren Houg was able to record a match-high 13 digs. Redshirt junior Meghan Niemann hit a team high .500 for the match, and did not record any errors.
Xavier (5-6, 1-0) was led by junior OH Abbey Bessler who tallied a match high 16 kills to couple 11 digs. Sophomore Kristen Massa was also strong, contributing 12 kills for the Musketeers.
After the Golden Eagles dropped the first set by just two points their momentum faltered in the second set and they let the Musketeers quickly push out to an 11-4 lead. From there Xavier used a 6-2 run and led Marquette 17-8 and earned set point at 24-13. MU was able to extend the match for three additional points before Xavier closed out the frame. The third set opened in a similar fashion with the Musketeers bounding out to a 15-7 lead early and MU could not catch up, letting multiple miscues aid in Xavier's win.
This was the first time MU dropped a conference opener since the 2010 season.
The Golden Eagles continue a six-match homestand and will host DePaul on Saturday, Sept. 26 beginning at 6 p.m. CT. The match will stream live on GoMarquette.com.
