Golden Eagles Lose 3-0 to USF in BIG EAST Opener

TAMPA - The Marquette University women's volleyball team lost its BIG EAST Conference opener Friday night in straight sets (25-21, 25-20, 25-23) to South Florida at The Corral. The Golden Eagles fall to 7-6 overall and 0-1 in the BIG EAST, while the Bulls improve to 5-7 overall and 1-0 in BIG EAST play.
Marquette was led by 13 kills from junior Ciara Jones and 10 from senior Rabbecka Gonyo. Freshman outside hitter Casey Read notched close to a double-double (eight kills and nine digs) in her first collegiate start.
USF was led by 14 kills from Allie Boaz and 11 from Erika DeVaughn.
Marquette led 17-16 in the first set before allowing the Bulls to pull out six-straight points and a 22-17 lead. The Golden Eagles pulled back to within three at 23-20 but would come no closer before ultimately falling 25-21. Read led all MU players with four kills in the opening frame.
The Bulls took control early in the second set and forced MU's first timeout at 13-7. The Golden Eagles fought back to pull within three points on multiple occasions, but would not come any closer. Both Jones and Gonyo notched four kills in the frame, while USF was led by six from Allie Boaz's.
A kill from the back row by Read put MU ahead 23-22 at the end of the third set, but MU could not seal the deal as USF closed out the match, 25-23, with the final three points.
The Golden Eagles return to action Sunday at Georgetown at 1 p.m. ET/noon CT at McDonough Arena.
