Golden Eagles Claim BIG EAST Opener Over USF, 3-1

MILWAUKEE - Led by 16 kills from Ashley Beyer and 15 from Danielle Carlson, the Marquette women's volleyball team began BIG EAST Conference play 1-0 for the first time since 2008 with a 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-19, 25-17) victory over USF Sunday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center.
The Golden Eagles improve to 10-4 (1-0 BIG EAST) with the victory, which included Beyer's fourth double-double of the season (16 kills, 18 digs). Carlson hit .600 in the match with 15 kills and no errors on 25 attacks, while freshman setter Chelsea Heier contributed 53 assists and seven digs. Sophomore libero Julie Jeziorowski led MU with 22 digs on the afternoon.
The Bulls (5-9, 1-1 BIG EAST) were led by 17 kills from junior outside hitter J'beria Davis and 21 digs from senior libero Janice Rivera.
Marquette used a 11-3 run to close out the first set, 25-17, after a kill by the Bulls' Andrea Rodriguez Gomez tied the set at 14-14. MU hit .220 in the opening frame and was led by eight kills from Beyer.
The Golden Eagles let a 19-15 lead slip away in the second frame following a Bulls timeout as USF claimed the set 25-23 on consecutive kills from Davis. The junior led both teams with seven kills in the stanza.
MU built an 11-7 lead out of the intermission before USF fought back to tie the set 19-19. Six-straight points then closed out the set for Marquette 25-19.
The Golden Eagles grabbed a commanding 20-12 advantage in the fourth and final set before closing out the match with a 25-17 victory in which MU hit .414 as a team.
Marquette returns to action Thursday, Sept. 29 at Sacred Heart and will continue BIG EAST play Saturday, Oct. 1 at Connecticut.
