MILWAUKEE--The Marquette University women's volleyball team came out firing on Saturday and swept DePaul 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-20) to earn its first BIG EAST victory of the season.
The Golden Eagles (9-5, 1-1) were led by junior Joy Miley and redshirt freshman Taylor Louis with 11 kills each, while Louis also hit .300 with just two errors. Redshirt junior Meghan Niemann smashed seven kills with just one error to hit .400 and also notched four blocks. MU jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead in the first set and did not trail again heading towards the 25-17 victory. The second set was the only set that the Blue Demons held a lead as they capitalized on miscues in the opening plays and held a 4-2 advantage early and then a 10-7 lead after consecutive kills from Brittany Maxwell. Following a timeout, the Golden Eagles went on an 11-3 run and did not trail again for the remainder of the match. DePaul threatened in the final set after Marquette gave up five unanswered points, which closed the gap to just a 20-19 lead, but the Golden Eagles once again remained steady and finished the third frame with a 5-1 run to complete the sweep.
The Golden Eagles were solid at the attack in the match committing just seven errors to hit a combined .364 clip, while holding DePaul to just a .165 hitting percentage. MU also had an 8-4 advantage at the block.
Marquette will conclude its current six-match homestand on Wednesday, Sept. 30 when the squad hosts Butler at 7 p.m. CT. Free video streaming will be available at GoMarquette.com.
