Bailey Leads Marquette to Sweep at St. John's

QUEENS, N.Y. – Sophomore outside hitter Autumn Bailey posted match highs of 19 kills and 14 digs to lead the Marquette University women’s volleyball team to a 25-16, 25-18, 25-21 sweep of St. John’s on Saturday at Carnesecca Arena in Queens, New York.

Bailey hit .415 (19-2-41) in the win for the Golden Eagles (11-3, 2-0 BIG EAST Conference) and also added two service aces and a pair of blocks. Classmate Nele Barber notched eight kills and hit .350, while middle hitter Meghan Niemann and senior right-side hitter Lindsey Gosh each had six kills.

Freshman setter Gabby Benda started and played the entire match for the first time in her career, posting 34 assists and seven digs, while pacing MU to a hitting efficiency of .347 (43-8-101).

Junior outside hitter Karin Palgutova led the Red Storm (12-6, 1-2 BIG EAST) with eight kills and Aleksandra Wachowicz added seven for St. John’s which hit a combined .120 (29-7-100).

Marquette opened the match by hitting .500 in the first set and took the final six points of the frame for the 25-16 victory. Bailey led MU with five kills and a pair of aces in the stanza, while Gosh and Barber added four apiece. Benda put up 14 assists on the Golden Eagles’ 16 kills in the first.

St. John’s head coach Joanne Persico called her final timeout of second set as MU jumped out to a 5-0 lead, which it stretched to 7-0 on Gosh’s third ace of the frame. The Red Storm pulled back within five points but would never get any closer as MU took a 2-0 lead into the intermission with a 25-18 win.

Bailey paced MU with eight kills and eight digs in the second set as the Golden Eagles hit a combined .289 (14-3-38).

The Golden Eagles wrapped up their second sweep of BIG EAST play with an 8-0 run to end the third after trailing 21-17. MU also used a 17-1 run to close out its sweep of Providence on Friday evening in the third set.

Marquette has won its last 14 matches in BIG EAST regular season competition and has not lost to St. John’s since a 3-0 defeat to the then-No. 22 Red Storm on Nov. 4, 2007, a stretch of eight straight.

The Golden Eagles return to Milwaukee for their first home matches of the year at the Al McGuire Center. MU will host Georgetown on Friday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. before welcoming BIG EAST preseason favorite Creighton for a 6 p.m. tilt.
