CINCINNATI - The Marquette volleyball team fell, 3-0 (30-27, 30-28, 30-24), to Cincinnati (11-4, 3-0) in its first road contest of the BIG EAST at the Fifth Third arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Senior Kim Todd posted her seventh double-double of the season as she notched 21 kills and collected 14 digs for the Golden Eagles (4-7, 1-1). Junior Ashlee Fisher chipped in nine kills, while senior Katie Weidner dished out a game-high 41 assists. Junior Terri Angst also tallied 14 digs and senior Jenn Brown put up six blocks.

"I was very impressed with the seniors tonight, all four of them stepped up and did their best to lead the team in a difficult situation," head coach Pati Rolf said. "Kim Todd had a phenomonal game, we just need to work on executing our offense more and getting new players into the game."

Marquette earned its first point on a block by Jenn Brown and Tiffany Helmbrecht and a kill by Todd saw MU trailing 6-4. Todd slammed another kill to bring the score to 8-5, but Cincinnati ran off an 8-4 run to forced the Golden Eagles into using a timeout, trailing 16-9. MU stormed out of the break to score four unanswered points and push the score to 16-13, but the Bearcats went on a 6-3 run to push MU into its second timeout still trailing, 22-16. Brown slammed a kill coming out of the break, and a kill by Fisher took the score to 24-18. Todd notched her eighth kill to get MU within two, at 26-24, and a hitting error from UC pushed the score to 26-25. Marquette could not come any closer and an ace from the Bearcats gave them a 30-27 game one victory. Todd reached double-figure kills in the first game as she hit 10 and tallied a .500 hitting percentage.

 

 

The Golden Eagles got off to a good start in the second game as Brown served to a 2-0 lead. The Bearcats crept closer and the game tied at nine apiece on a block by Todd and Rabbecka Gonyo. MU scored three unanswered to force Cincinnati to use a timeout at 12-9, Todd slammed her 13th kill to keep MU ahead, 14-10, and an error by UC gave the Golden Eagles a 16-12 advantage. MU used a 4-1 run to force Cincinnati into its second timeout at 20-13. The Bearcats dominated follwing the rest, as they hit a 6-3 run to bring the score to 23-19, still in MU's favor. Blocks by Helmbrecht and Gonyo kept the lead at 26-21, but Cincinnati rallied to force the Golden Eagles into their final timeout with the score at 28-26. Marquette lost the lead, 29-28 on a hitting error and would not regain control as the Bearcats took the second stanza, 30-28. Todd hit seven kills for Marquette.

Helmbrecht posted a kill to give Marquette a 4-2 lead in game three. Todd slammed her 18th kill to keep MU ahead, 6-3 and notched another for a 12-10 advantage. Fisher notched a kill at 16-12, but the Bearcats crept in to force MU into a timeout as they trailed, 21-20. The teams went point-for-point until UC opened a 25-22 advantage and the Golden Eagles called their final timeout. Helmbrecht sliced a kill to bring MU within four at 27-23, but the Bearcats earned the chance to serve for match point at 29-24 and won the final game, 30-24.

Leading the Bearcats was Stephanie Niemer with 14 kills, while Jamie Frey collected 18 digs. Jessie Nevitt added 12 kills.

Marquette will be back on the court Sunday, Sept. 30, at 1 p.m. CT, when they travel to Lousiville.
