LOUISVILLE - The Marquette volleyball team fell, 3-1 (15-30, 30-27, 15-30, 27-30), to Louisville (9-4, 4-0 ) at the Cardinal Arena, after fighting through four games.

Kim Todd led the Golden Eagles (4-8, 1-2), and all scorers with 21 kills and a .259 hitting percentage, while Katie Weidner dished out 44 assists in the match. Ashlee Fisher slammed 12 kills and Terri Angst collected 15 digs.

"This was a dissapointing loss," head coach Pati Rolf said. "with a young team, they gave outstanding effort, Kim Todd and Jenn Brown had a tremedous match. We are giving more effort at the level we can and are making more progress, so it is fun to watch."

The Golden Eagles took early control of the first game as a kill by Ashlee Fisher follwed by a Louisville error gave MU a 3-2 lead. A block from Jenn Brown, Tiffany Helmbrecht and Rabeckka Gonyo gave Marquette a 7-6 lead. The Cardinals took over at 10-9 and continued to challenge the Golden Eagles when a 6-0 Louisville run led to Marquette using both of its timeouts, trailing 20-12. A kill by Brown snapped a nine-point Cardinal stretch with MU trailing, 23-13. The Golden Eagles could not find a rhythm as U of L earned the chance to serve for game point at 29-15, and took the victory, 30-15, on a block. Fisher and Todd each slammed four kills for Marquette.

Marquette regrouped in the second stanza when a block from Weidner and Brown tied the score at three apiece. MU continued to lead when Todd served an ace to a 9-7 advantage and then notched a kill for 12-9. The Golden Eagles used a 4-2 run to their advantage and forced Louisville into a timeout, with a 16-11 lead. The Cardinals came out of the break to go on a 6-3 run that pushed the score to 19-17, and led to MU using its first timeout. The Golden Eagles used the break wisely and increased their lead to 24-19, after running off a 5-1 mark, but used their final timeout after Louisville crept back at 24-22. A kill by Brown kept MU in front, 26-24, but the Cardinals tied the score at 26 follwing a kill. The teams went point-for-point until MU served for game point at 29-27 and took the second game, 30-27, on a block by Gonyo. Todd posted six kills and MU out-hit the Cardinals .342 compared to .279.

 

 

Brown hit a kill to get MU on the board in the third game and a kill by Todd tied the score at three each. Lousiville grabbed a lead at 9-7 and went on a 5-1 run to force MU into a timeout at 14-8. A kill by Fisher snapped three unanswered points from the Cardinals, but three more unanswered led to the Golden Eagles using their final timeout, trailing 20-9. Fisher slammed a kill to break Lousiville's scoring run and Todd tipped the ball over to take the score to 23-11 in the Cardinals favor. An ace by U of L gave them a 28-14 advantage and at 29-15, served for game point, taking a 30-15 victory on a block.

In a close fourth game, MU snapped up an early 2-1 lead on a block from Fisher and Helmbrecht and pushed the score to 4-2 on a block from Fisher and Brown. The Cardiinals tied the score at seven, but kills by Brown and Todd kept Marquette ahead, 10-7. Louisville took its first lead, and forced the Golden Eagles to call timeout at 13-11, but they remained in the game when a block from Brown and Todd tied the score at 16. The teams traded points until the Golden Eagles grabbed a 23-21 lead to force Louisville into calling a timeout. Fisher hit a kill to keep MU in front, 24-22, but Marquette used its final timeout when the Cardinals pulled within a point at 25-24. the Cardinals scored two unanswered to take a 28-26 lead, but a kill by Brown kept MU within a point. At 29-27, Louisville served for match point and took the fourth game, 30-27 to earn the match victory.

Leading the Cardinals was Svetlana Dukule and Jana Matiasovka with 16 kills apiece. Samantha Dabbs dished out a match-high 54 assists.

Marquette will return home on Friday, Oct. 5, when they host Georgetown at 7 p.m. They also welcome USF, Sunday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m.
