STORRS, Conn. - The Marquette University women's volleyball team rallied from a first set loss to down the University of Connecticut 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-13) Saturday afternoon at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn.

The Golden Eagles improve to 12-4 overall and 2-0 in the BIG EAST Conference with the victory and were led by 19 kills apiece from senior outside hitters Ashley Beyer and Ciara Jones. Sophomore libero Julie Jeziorowski dug 20 UConn attacks, while freshman setter Chelsea Heier notched 45 assists for Marquette.

"I thought that our outside hitters did a great job of being terminal, they did a great job of swinging away and allowed us to work our way back into the match," third-year Marquette head coach Bond Shymansky said. "It wasn't all pretty but once we were rolling, I thought it was pretty efficient and very effective. This is what our team is going to continue to have to do on the road. Find ways to well up our own internal energy and team chemistry and calm that in those moments when we are competing in someone else's gym."

The Huskies (8-8, 0-3 BIG EAST) were led by 12 kills from senior outside hitter Jordan Kirk.

After a furious start to open the first set by notching nine of their first 10 points on kills, the Golden Eagles went cold and allowed the Huskies to wrest control of the opening set by taking their first lead 15-14.

Marquette was able to tie the opening set at 23 on a kill from Jones, but UConn retook the lead, 24-23, on a dump by UConn setter Angela Roidt. A Jones attack was blocked on the outside to give UConn the first frame 25-23.

"Sometimes we are two steps forward and one step back a little bit, with just trying to focus on first contact. Our serve and our passing left us for a little while and we got it back for the end of the match. In some ways we are pretty advanced but we also have to make sure that we tend to the basics," Shymansky said.

The Golden Eagles again jumped out to an early lead in the second set after two Mrotek kills and a pair of service aces from Heier gave Marquette a 5-0 lead. Marquette would hold on for the 25-20 victory in the second set, while hitting .323 as a team.

Beyer landed seven kills out of the intermission to help MU claim a 25-16 third set victory as MU hit .419 with 15 kills and just two errors.

The Golden Eagles used a 15-2 run in the middle of the fourth and final set to build a 19-6 lead before holding on for a 25-13 win. Jeziorowski landed three consecutive kills in the middle of a 7-0 MU run during that stretch. Jones landed six kills in the final frame, while Beyer had five.

Marquette's last win at Gampel Pavilion was a 3-1 victory on Oct. 23, 2005 in MU's inaugural season in the BIG EAST.

The Golden Eagles return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. Central time against St. John's at Carnesecca Arena in Queens, N.Y. Live stats and streaming video can be accessed on GoMarquette.com, courtesy of RedStormSports.com.
