Golden Eagles Sweep Penn 25-19, 25-22, 25-10

PHILADELPHIA - The Marquette University women's volleyball team used a dominating 25-10 third set victory to sweep the University of Pennsylvania 25-19, 25-22, 25-10 Saturday evening at The Palestra.
Junior Ashley Beyer led the Golden Eagles (9-7, 1-2 BIG EAST) with 17 kills, while Ciara Jones added 11 of her own on the night. Marquette hit a combined .353 on the night with 52 kills, 11 errors and 116 total attacks.
The Golden Eagles took the opening set 25-19 with a team-high four kills from Jones and three each from Rabbecka Gonyo and Danielle Carlson. Marquette pulled away from an 8-8 tie in the first to open up a 20-15 lead before the Quakers' first timeout of the set and ended the frame on a Beyer service ace.
The second set was much tighter than the first until MU pulled out to a 20-16 lead following a pair of Penn timeouts. The Quakers brought the match to 23-22 before the Golden Eagles closed out the frame with kills from Beyer and Carlson.
Marquette combined to hit .320 (21-5-50) in the second set and was led by seven kills from Beyer and five from Jones. Freshman libero Julie Jeziorowski also added a team-high seven digs in the stanza.
The Golden Eagles led 6-0 to start the third set and never looked back before a 25-10 victory.
Beyer led MU with eight kills in the final frame, while redshirt sophomore Holly Mertens and freshmen Courtney Mrotek and Casey Read each added kills of their own. The Golden Eagles hit .533 (18-2-30) in the final set and held Penn to an attack percentage of .000 (5-5-22).
The Quakers fall to 4-9 on the season with the loss.
Saturday's match was the Quakers' Dig Pink match, promoting awareness and raising money for breast cancer research. All money raised supported the Side-Out Foundation, an organization dedicated to breast cancer research through volleyball matches, clinics and rallies.
Marquette will host its Dig Pink match on Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. against Cincinnati.
The Golden Eagles return to action Friday, Oct. 8 against St. John's at the Al McGuire Center in MU's BIG EAST Conference home opener.
