QUEENS, N.Y. – The Marquette University women's volleyball team improved to 3-0 in BIG EAST Conference play for the first time in program history with a 3-0 sweep of St. John's (25-17, 25-19, 25-23) Sunday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena in Queens, N.Y.

The Golden Eagles improve to 13-4 overall and were paced by 13 kills from junior middle hitter Danielle Carlson and 12 from senior outside hitter Ashley Beyer. Beyer improves her career total to 994 kills in her third season at Marquette and is on pace to top 1,000 in Friday's match with Georgetown at the Al McGuire Center.

The Red Storm (9-12, 0-4 BIG EAST) was led by 12 kills from senior outside hitter Darlene Ramdin.

Marquette received five kills from Beyer in the opening frame as MU hit .435 as a team to take the first 25-17. The Golden Eagles used a 4-0 run to take a 21-14 lead and held off the Red Storm for a 1-0 advantage to open the match.

St. John's hit just .042 in the first frame and was paced by a pair of kills from both Ramdin and senior right-side hitter Brunna Kronbauer.

The Golden Eagles took their largest lead of the second set at 20-13 on a service ace by Heier. That point followed a furious rally in which Beyer's play at the net and a diving dig by sophomore libero Julie Jeziorowski gave MU a 19-13 advantage an attack error by St. John's sophomore middle hitter Kerri Johnson.

Carlson and senior outside hitter Ciara Jones each had five kills for MU in the second frame, while Ramdin led the Red Storm with five kills herself.

The third set was much closer as both teams struggled to gain much of an advantage. The Red Storm was able to tie the frame at 23-23 after trailing by as many as five points before Beyer closed out the set and the match with consecutive kills.

Beyer topped former teammate Rabbecka Gonyo (977 kills) and moved into 10th place in Marquette history with her 15th kill against Connecticut on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles return to action Friday, Oct. 7 against Georgetown at the Al McGuire Center at 7 p.m., before playing host to Villanova on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast live on GoMarquette.com multimedia platform, MUTube, with MUTV on the call.
