Marquette Volleyball Falls To No. 18-Ranked Louisville
Oct. 4, 2003 MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette volleyball team gave No. 18-ranked Louisville a battle Saturday evening before falling to the Cardinals in four games. U of L raised its record to 9-3 overall (2-0) following a 30-22, 29-31, 32-30, 30-25 decision over the Golden Eagles who saw their overall record slip to 3-12 (0-2). The match was played at Cardinal Arena on the Louisville campus. Louisville hit 31.6 percent (77-17--190) for the match compared to Marquette's effort of 22.3 percent (69-25--197). The Cardinals held a 100-87 edge in digs and recorded eight total blocks to MU's four. Sophomore Theresa Coughlin led Marquette with 23 attacks and concluded the contest hitting 26.7 percent (23-7--60). Junior Erin Freer (Stevensville, Mich.) posted 17 kills and tied for team high honors in digs with 16. Senior Ann Lopata (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) rounded out the team's double-figure attackers with 11. Freshman Jamie Mueller (Richfield, Wis.) and junior Sarah Vernon (Englewood, Col.) tied Freer with 16 digs. Senior Gemma Greer doled out 57 assists and contributed 15 digs. Greer's assists total enabled her to move into second place on MU's all-time assists list with 3,700. She surpassed Jennifer Martin's (1988-91) total of 3,651.
Marquette returns home next Friday (Oct. 10) to battle Charlotte in a C-USA match starting at 7:00 p.m.
