MILWAUKEE - In a match between teams pegged to finish in the top two spots in the preseason BIG EAST Coaches Poll, Creighton topped the Marquette University women's volleyball team 29-27, 25-17, 25-27, 25-20 on Saturday evening at the Al McGuire Center before over 1,700 fans.

Sophomore outside hitter Autumn Bailey topped the Golden Eagles (12-4, 3-1 BIG EAST) with 24 kills and 18 digs, while classmate Nele Barber posted 14 kills. Libero Lauren Houg tied for the team lead with 18 digs and freshman setter Gabby Benda notched a match-high 43 assists.

Jess Bird led the Bluejays (12-6, 5-0 BIG EAST) with 18 kills and Kelli Browning (14 kills) and Marysa Wilkinson (10 kills) also reached double figures. Creighton won its sixth straight match, while Marquette fell for the first time since Friday, Sept. 12 against Rice.

The Bluejays took the opening set 29-27 after the Golden Eagles staved off set point on four occasions and had a pair of set points themselves (25-24 and 27-26). Bailey posted nine kills and six digs in the first set, but MU hit just .177 as a team. Browning and Bird each notched five kills for CU in the first.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 10 points in the second set as the Jays hit .424 to take a 2-0 lead into the break. Creighton took its largest lead of the frame, 20-10, on one of Bailey four attack errors in the stanza.

Marquette fought back out of the intermission for a 27-25 victory in the third set despite trailing 24-23 late on a Bird kill. Bailey posted eight kills in the third to lead MU but also had six attack errors, though the Bluejays hit a combined -.028 (9-10-36) as a squad.

Creighton built up a six point lead midway through the fourth and final set and held off the Golden Eagles for a 25-20 win. MU was able to pull within three after trailing 17-11, but could not gain much more ground.

Saturday’s announced attendance of 1,707 is the biggest crowd to watch the Golden Eagles at the Al McGuire Center since a sold-out crowd watched MU sweep Georgetown on Oct. 16, 2009 prior to Marquette Madness.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 8 in a 6 p.m. Central time match at Xavier in Cincinnati.
