MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette University women's volleyball team dropped a match to Connecticut Sunday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center, 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-19).

"UConn did exactly what our scouting report said they were going to do and they did it well," said head coach Pati Rolf. "They forced us to follow our plan but we did not execute."

The Golden Eagles got off to a slow start in the first frame, falling behind 4-0 before a kill by senior Ashlee Fisher got MU on the board. Another kill by Leslie Bielski gave the Golden Eagles another point, but after three straight points from the Huskies, MU took a timeout, down 7-2. Out of the timeout, MU rallied to pull within one at 9-8 before UConn reeled off five points to put the set out of reach, winning 25-20.

In the first set, Bielski led MU with nine kills while Caryn Mastandrea added 13 assists.

The second set saw Marquette get off to a 1-0 lead on a kill by Fisher. UConn scored the next three points to take the lead at 3-1 before MU tied the set at 4-4 on a service ace by freshman Tiara Russell. Marquette rallied back from a five point deficit at 10-5 to tie the set at 12-12 before UConn pulled away for the 25-21 victory.

In the second, Fisher had five kills, Mastandrea had 11 assists and Amy Deelo had six digs.

The third stanza began just as the first, with UConn taking a 4-0 lead before MU responded. An early 8-2 hole forced Marquette to take their first timeout of the set. Out of the break, two kills by Fisher and an attack error by UConn put points on the board for MU before the Golden Eagles called another timeout, down 13-5. From that point, Marquette scored five straight to pull within three at 13-10 before UConn pulled away for the 25-19 set win.

On the day, Bielski and Fisher paced the Golden Eagles (7-8, 2-1 BIG EAST) with 13 kills a piece, while Mastandrea had 32 assists and Deelo had 10 digs. For the Huskies (11-6, 2-2), Chauntay Mickens had 11 kills while BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Week Annie Luhrsen added eight kills and 30 assists.

Marquette returns to action on Friday at USF at 6 p.m., before traveling to Georgetown for a match on Sunday.
