Marquette Rallies to Top Villanova in Four Sets

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Marquette University women's volleyball team posted a 3-1 victory over Villanova on Saturday evening at Jake Nevin Field House to remain the lone undefeated team in BIG EAST Conference action.
The Golden Eagles (10-4, 3-0 BIG EAST) hit .333 in the victory and received double-digit kills from freshmen Autumn Bailey (15 kills) and Nele Barber (10), while junior Lindsey Gosh added 14 kills. Gosh also added to her BIG EAST lead with four service aces in the match.
The Wildcats (10-6, 2-1 BIG EAST) fell for the first time in seven matches after having previously captured six consecutive victories and nine of 10 matches overall. Lauren Carpenter notched 13 kills for Villanova to lead the squad.
The Marquette men's soccer team, fresh off its 1-0 overtime victory at Villanova on Saturday afternoon, entered Jake Nevin Field House early in the second and provided the boost its classmates from Milwaukee needed to recover from a first set loss.
Marquette struggled mightily to start the match, falling 25-22 in the opening frame while hitting a meager .148. Villanova hit .324 in the set and was led by four kills apiece from Gabby Pethokoukis and Michaela Berendt. The stanza was tied at 20 before the Wildcats reeled off four-straight to seize control.
A big 25-22 victory in the second set out of a 21-21 tie allowed the Golden Eagles to even the match at the break. MU hit .440 (13-3-25) in the frame and was led by seven kills from Bailey, while Gosh added three kills and a pair of aces.
A late 8-1 surge in the third set propelled MU to a 25-20 win out of the break. Gosh and Barber each added a pair of kills during the run as Marquette pulled away from a 19-17 deficit following Shymansky's final timeout.
A .520 hitting percentage (17-2-25) for Marquette ended the fourth and final frame rather quickly for the visitors, 25-14.
Reigning BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week Elizabeth Koberstein added 41 assists and 10 digs for Marquette.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at the Al McGuire Center against the University of Loyola-Chicago at 7 p.m. The match can be viewed live for free on GoMarquette.com.
