Marquette Sweeps Loyola Chicago Tuesday Night
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's volleyball team took a respite from BIG EAST Conference action on Tuesday night and notched a sweep of Loyola University Chicago, 25-22, 25-16, 25-13, at the Al McGuire Center.
The Golden Eagles (11-4) received balanced offensive contributions on the evening, but were led by 12 kills from freshman outside hitter Autumn Bailey. Meghan Niemann and Lindsey Gosh also added 11 apiece for MU, which hit a combined .384 (54-11-112).
The Ramblers (8-10) were led by eight kills from Kathleen Vogel, while Maureen Carls hit .389 with seven kills.
Marquette used a 7-1 run to break free from a 7-7 tie in the opening frame and held on for a 25-22 victory. Loyola head coach Chris Muscat used both of his timeouts during the run, including one while trailing 14-8 after a Gosh kill. The Ramblers would pull themselves back to within a pair at 22-20 before MU closed out the stanza.
The Golden Eagles claimed the second set 25-16 while hitting a combined .439 (20-2-41). Gosh, Niemann and Bailey all had five kills for MU in the set and Koberstein led the MU attack with 17 assists.
Loyola used early timeouts while trailing 4-0 and 7-2 in the third set, but couldn't recover as Marquette claimed its fifth sweep of the year with a 25-13 victory.
The Golden Eagles resume BIG EAST action on Sunday, Oct. 13 at D.J. Sokol Arena in Omaha, Neb., against league preseason favorite Creighton.
