MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's volleyball team moved to 5-0 in BIG EAST Conference play Sunday afternoon with a 25-19, 28-26, 25-21 sweep of Villanova at the Al McGuire Center.
The Golden Eagles, winners of 12 of their last 13 matches, improve to 15-4 on the season and were led by 16 kills from senior outside hitter Ciara Jones. Freshman setter Chelsea Heier notched 40 assists, while junior middle hitter Danielle Carlson had 12 kills and hit .458.
The Wildcats (12-7, 4-2 BIG EAST) received 13 kills from senior middle blocker Maggie Mergen.
Villanova controlled the action early on in the first set, but the Golden Eagles bounced back and evened the score at 11 with an Ashley Beyer service ace. Marquette then seized control after some back-and-forth play, and pulled away to take the set 25-19. Jones had seven kills in the opening frame.
Marquette had a comfortable lead for most of the second set, and was serving frost point at 24-21. However, Villanova ripped off three straight points to even the match. Marquette held strong however, and Jones had the final kill as they took the second set 28-26. Julie Jeziorowski had 12 digs in the set.
The Golden Eagles dominated the third set, never leading by less than three after taking a 14-11 lead. Carlson and Jones each had five kills in the final set, which Marquette won comfortably, 25-21.
