Marquette Volleyball Topples Charlotte

MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette volleyball team earned its first Conference USA win of the season Friday evening with a decisive three-game win over Charlotte in a match played at the MU Gym. The Golden Eagles bested the 49ers, 30-12, 30-21, 30-19, and raised their overall record to 4-12, 1-2 in league play. Charlotte fell to 6-15, 0-3 in conference action. Marquette, playing its first home match since Sept. 13, dominated in most facets of the contest and hit a season-high 33.3 percent (53-17--108) compared to Charlotte's nine percent (24-23--112). MU finished with a 54-32 advantage in digs while Charlotte held an 8-2 margin in team blocks. Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was senior Ann Lopata who peppered Charlotte with 12 attacks while hitting a career-best 70.6 percent (12-0--17). Sophomore Theresa Coughlin (Chicago) registered a team-high 13 attacks and posted a season-high 45.5 attack percentage (13-3--22). Junior Erin Freer (Stevensville, Mich.) chipped in nine kills and finished with 10 digs, her seventh straight outing of doube figures in that category.
Marquette continues its brief homestand on Saturday evening (Oct. 11) when it entertains East Carolina starting at 7:00 p.m. at the MU Gym.
