Marquette Volleyball Defeats East Carolina

Milwaukee -- The Marquette volleyball team closed out a successful weekend of action Saturday evening with a four-game win over East Carolina in a match played at the MU Gym. The Golden Eagles, who beat Charlotte last night, registered a 30-20, 24-30, 30-20, 30-25 decision over ECU, raising its record to 5-12 overall, 2-2 in C-USA action. East Carolina slipped to 8-13 in overall action 0-4 in conference play. For the second straight match, Marquette's offense was in high gear with the team finishing with a 31.2 attack percentage (77-29--154) compared to the Pirates' effort of 23.6 percent. The Golden Eagles held a 48-41 advantage in digs while ECU finished with a 12-10 margin in team blocks. Marquette spread out its offense with a trio of players finishing in double digits in attacks. Sophomore Theresa Coughlin (Chicago) racked up a match-high 23 kills en route to an impressive 39.5 hitting percentage (23-6--43). Her attack total represented her sixth outing of the year with 20 or more attacks. Senior Ann Lopata capped off a solid weekend with 16 attacks, four digs and eight blocks. Lopata, who recorded a 40.6 hitting percentage against ECU (16-3--32), concluded the weekend with 28 total attacks along with a 51.0 hitting percentage (28-3--49). Junior Erin Freer (Stevensville, Mich.) rounded out the team's double-figure attackers with 18 kills. Senior setter Gemma Greer doled out a season-high 61 assists while chipping in seven digs and five blocks.
Marquette continues conference play next weekend (Oct. 17-18) with road matches at Tulane and Southern Miss.
