CHICAGO – Sixteen kills and a career-best seven service aces from Autumn Bailey paced the Marquette University women’s volleyball team to a 25-15, 25-19, 25-16 sweep of DePaul on Saturday evening at McGrath-Phillips Arena in Chicago.

“Autumn served great,” Marquette head coach Ryan Theis said. “It was fun to watch. She had a couple of big runs and we had a good serve/block night. Quite a bit of the time I don’t think we dug extremely well but it was fun to see Autumn get going back there.”

The sophomore outside hitter also notched four blocks on the evening for the Golden Eagles (14-4, 5-1 BIG EAST), who hit .304 as a team. Redshirt sophomore Meghan Niemann posted seven kills on .538 hitting and fellow middle hitter Teal Schnurr also added a new career high with nine blocks and hit .500.

MU setter Mary Nilles put up the match’s only double-double with 31 assists and 12 digs.

The Blue Demons (3-15, 1-5 BIG EAST), who have lost 12 of their last 13 matches, were led by junior outside hitter Callie Huebener’s 10 kills.

The Golden Eagles claimed the opening set 25-15 by hitting a combined .407 (13-2-27) and were led by a frame-high four kills from Bailey. MU broke free from a 5-5 tie with six of the next seven points and never looked back. A combined block by Nilles and Schnurr gave MU its largest lead of the stanza at 23-12 and Gosh closed out action with her third kill.

Gosh also ended the second frame with a kill to give MU a 25-19 victory. Bailey led all players with five kills in the second and keyed a critical 5-0 run with a kill and a pair of aces when the score was tied 11-11.

The Golden Eagles used an 8-0 run early in the third set to close out their ninth sweep of the season with a 25-16 victory. MU built n 18-7 edge on Bailey’s career-best seventh ace of the night, but hit a match-low .226 in the final frame with six attack errors. DePaul hit .000 in the third set with eight kills and eight errors.

In their last trip to McGrath-Phillips Arena, it took the Golden Eagles five sets to dispatch of the Blue Demons after leading 2-1 in the 2013 BIG EAST Conference opener on Sept. 28 of last season. Bailey posted a career-high 29 kills in that match on .500 hitting, while AVCA Third Team All-American Elizabeth Koberstein notched an MU career-best 69 assists.

Marquette has won 14 of the last 15 meetings and is 10-1 against DePaul since the long-time rivals entered the BIG EAST in 2005.

The Golden Eagles will hit the road for another midweek match, this time in a unique noon CT start against Butler at the Health and Recreation Complex in Indianapolis as Hinkle Fieldhouse undergoes renovation.

“We are going to practice tomorrow and then take Monday off because with midterms we thought that would actually help,” Theis said. “We are going to get back at it tomorrow and take a look at Butler and try to take a bit of a rest then. We’ve been gearing up because we had something like five matches over 10 days. Thursday we only lifted so we have been pretty light in preparation for this week of three matches.”
