OMAHA, Neb. – The Marquette University women’s volleyball team was swept on Sunday afternoon by BIG EAST Conference-preseason favorite Creighton at a packed D.J. Sokol Arena in Omaha, Neb.

The Golden Eagles (11-5, 3-1 BIG EAST) allowed large Creighton runs late in each of the first two sets to fall into a 2-0 hole at the intermission, from which they could not recover.

Redshirt freshman Meghan Niemann paced Marquette with 12 kills in the loss, which is MU’s first in conference action this season and first to an unranked opponent. Freshman Nele Barber also reached double digits with 10 kills.

Junior setter Michelle Sicner led the Bluejays (12-4, 3-1 BIG EAST) with her second triple-double in as many matches with 33 assists, 12 kills and 15 digs. Creighton also received 12 kills from junior outside hitter Leah McNary.

The Jays also swept Marquette in 2012 to end the Golden Eagles’ season in the NCAA Championship in Minneapolis, Minn.

Creighton took eight of the final 12 points of the opening set for a 25-21 victory sealed by a Kelli Browning kill. After falling behind 5-1 early on a score of unforced errors, Marquette used a 6-0 run of its own to re-take its first lead since 1-0 at 11-10. Barber gave MU its final lead, 12-11, as the Golden Eagles would try unsuccessfully to overtake CU the remainder of the stanza.

Both teams struggled to hit in the first with each squad under .100 (.079 for CU, .093 for MU).

The Golden Eagles allowed a late 7-1 Creighton run in the second set and fell once again 25-21. Three straight kills from Barber gave Marquette a 19-18 edge and MU pushed its lead to 20-18 out of a Creighton timeout. A lone kill from Lindsey Gosh was all Marquette could muster the rest of the way as CU hit .333 in the frame.

The Bluejays jumped out midway through the third set and held on for a 25-19 win to pick up their second sweep in as many matches against MU. Creighton hit .441 (19-4-34) in the final stanza.

Creighton improves to 4-1 in the all-time series against the Golden Eagles.

Each of the previous three matchups in the series were also sweeps. The Jays swept Marquette in Milwaukee in 2010 before MU returned the favor on Creighton’s home court in 2011. CU also swept the Golden Eagles in the NCAA Championship to end MU’s 2012 season in Minneapolis.

The two programs will meet again in Milwaukee on Friday, Oct. 25 at the Al McGuire Center.

Sunday’s announced attendance at D.J. Sokol Arena was 2,109.

The Golden Eagles return to action against DePaul on Saturday, Oct. 19 when they return to the Al McGuire Center to begin a four-match homestand.
