INDIANAPOLIS - Despite a 2-1 lead, the Marquette University women's volleyball team fell in five sets to Butler at the Health and Recreation Complex in Indianapolis on Wednesday afternoon (25-22, 22-25, 18-25, 25-22, 15-11).

"We needed to finish in game four," Marquette head coach Ryan Theis said. "We were up 17-14 and didn't finish it. We got stuck and didn't execute certain things. We didn't execute great to begin with, but 17-14 in the fourth and we weren't able to stop them."

Sophomore outside hitter Autumn Bailey posted career highs of 30 kills and 25 digs in the loss as the Golden Eagles (14-5) fall to 5-2 in BIG EAST Conference action. Lindsey Gosh (12 kills), Meghan Niemann (12 kills) and Nele Barber (11 kills) also reached double digit kills, while Baber added her own double-double with 15 digs.

Freshman setter Gabby Benda came on in relief of Mary Nilles to post a career-best 49 assists and MU also received a career-high eight blocks from Niemann.

The Bulldogs (13-7, 5-3 BIG EAST) were led by 15 kills from senior middle blocker Erica Stahl's on .467 hitting, while Belle Obert added 14 kills and Stephanie Kranda posted 13 in the win.

"They were getting quality swings, we were tipping all of it and it was too easy for them with their good middles," Theis said. "Back in transition you can't just tip the ball over and expect to side out."

The win was Butler's first over MU since joining the conference as the Golden Eagles took all three matches against Butler in 2013.

Butler took the opening frame 25-22, while hitting a combined .318 and was led by four kills apiece from Makayla Ferguson, Mary Striedl and Kranda. The Bulldogs burst out to a 6-2 lead as MU called its first timeout of the match and went the distance with the lead. MU would pull within a point midway through the first and fight off set point three times before the Bulldogs prevailed.

The Golden Eagles responded in the second set to tie the match 1-1 with a 25-22 win, led by seven kills from Bailey. MU led by three points early before Butler took its first lead 11-10 and the Bulldogs held their last edge of the frame 12-11. MU used its only timeout of the second as Butler pulled within a pair late, 22-19, but BU put the ensuing serve into the net.

Bailey added another seven blocks in the third set as MU went on to a 25-18 victory and led by as many as eight points on a Gosh ace, 17-9. The Bulldogs pulled within three, 18-15, but the Golden Eagles took seven of the final 10 points of the frame for the win. Butler hit just .057 in the third and sided out at just 43 percent.

Marquette led by three points (17-14) midway through the fourth, but fell to Butler 25-22 as the Bulldogs pushed the match to a fifth frame. The Golden Eagles pulled the stanza to within one, 23-22, on a Bailey kill but BU took the final two points of the stanza for the win.

Stahl posted five kill and no errors on nine attacks in the fourth to pace BU.

Butler jumped out to an early 5-3 lead in the fifth set as the Golden Eagles called their first TO, and led by as many as four on the game's final tally. The Bulldogs received four kills and zero errors from Obert in the final set as the senior landed the game's final point for a 15-11 win.

The Golden Eagles return home to face Villanova on Friday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. and Seton Hall, a team undefeated (7-0) in BIG EAST action, on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Both matches will feature a live video stream, with Saturday's contest produced by the BIG EAST Digital Network. Patrick Reed and Bob Brainerd will have the call on Saturday against the Pirates, which will be available through FOX Sports GO, the mobile application for FOX Sports.
