Marquette Comes Back for 3-2 Win at DePaul

CHICAGO -- Faced with a 2-0 deficit in the match, the Marquette women's volleyball stormed back to earn a 3-2 (23-25, 16-25, 27-25, 25-22, 15-11) victory at DePaul on Saturday evening.
The Golden Eagles (17-4, 7-2) were led by redshirt sophomore Taylor Louis with 21 kills, while classmate Jenna Rosenthal added 14 and freshman Allie Barber notched 11 kills. Rosenthal hit .591 with three blocks, while redshirt senior Meghan Niemann totaled a team-high eight blocks in the match, helping MU to a 15-7 advantage.
Senior Sara Blasier dished out 44 assists with 10 digs for her eighth double of the season, while Louis collected 11 digs for her fifth double-double this year. Senior Lauren Houg and junior Manon Geoffroy also notched double digit digs with 12 and 10, respectively.
DePaul (11-10, 5-4) was led by Brittany Maxwell with 20 digs and a .395 hitting percentage.
The first set was a tight contest with seven lead changes and 14 tie scores before DePaul claimed a 25-23 victory.
In the second set, DePaul jumped out to a 6-2 lead early, but MU fought back and was able to tie the score at 7-7 before another run by the Blue Demons. DePaul reached set point first, 24-16 and served an ace to close out the set.
Marquette came out of the break with a 6-2 lead and did not trail in the third set. The Golden Eagles hit .310 in the frame, while holding DePaul to just .179, which was the first set they hit over .200 in the match. Blasier and Niemann combined for a block, which gave MU set point at 24-20, but DePaul ran off four consecutive points to tie the score at 24. MU took set point again after Louis slammed down a kill, 25-24, but the Blue Demons fought back again and tied the score at 25. Blasier launched an ace, which was the set-winner, 27-25.
The Golden Eagles stormed out in the fourth set and led 16-9 after back-to-back kills from freshman Allie Barber. A mini run from DePaul closed the lead to 16-12, but a block by Louis and Barber kept the lead at four points, 21-17 as DePaul used its last timeout. After the break, Rosenthal planted a kill and a hitting error from the Blue Demons gave Marquette set point, 24-20, but DePaul fought back twice before Barber slammed down a kill to win the fourth set, 25-22 and force the final fifth frame.
DePaul reached eight points first in the fifth and final frame as the teams switched sides of the court with the Blue Demons holding an 8-7 lead. Blasier landed a kill to put the Golden Eagles in front, 9-8 and DePaul called timeout. MU took control after the break as Louis tallied a kill and joined for a block with Niemann as the Blue Demons burned their final timeout with MU in front, 11-8. Rosenthal landed a kill for match point, 14-11 and combined with Louis for a block that sealed the comeback victory, 15-11.
Marquette is now 4-0 in five set matches this season.
The Golden Eagles will return home for two matches beginning Friday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. Central when the squad welcomes Providence to the Al McGuire Center.
